Eye on the Industry

Dear Friends,

I address everyone as such because we are sending this electronic communication to distributors and some end users as well as other industry leaders and suppliers.
I have just returned from the ProMat 07 show and much to my disappointment don’t have much to say for the time spent there trying to find something new in our industry other than the software and significant number of “New” integrators that have started to exhibit at the show. I don’t know if I was looking in the wrong places or old technologies, but NEW Ideas on how to store products in a more efficient and cost effective way eluded me.
What I did have the opportunity to do was renew acquaintances with friends in the industry that I only, sorry to say, see every trade show. That is and was very rewarding from a technical stand point as well informational. There was lots of talk about who was doing what and where different people are now situated as well as speculation on lots of gossip. However one of the main topics that were discussed was the disappointing lack of new technology being introduced to the industry. And why we weren’t displaying at the show.
My standard answer was one that was given to me by my friend, the late Jack Frost, if you are a consistent displayer at the show and than stop, you will be consistent in your absence. The other answer is that when we do display at the show to show new products we are just giving our competitors a chance to see what we are doing and copy our work. That has happened with our Patented Brake design of the Cantilever wheels and several other innovations that we have brought forward in the past. As well as other innovators like UNIX who have now over 5 copies of their product. A very strong counter point that has been given is that since we weren’t displaying, we weren’t having those fabulous hospitality suites that Joni has been noted for in the past, and thus the opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie that comes from that activity.
This year we are scheduled to have 3 new product introductions. Would ProMat have been the place to show those products, thus giving our competitors a heads-up? Or would we have been better served to present those products at a Private hospitality suite presentation as we have done in the past to introduce the products?

These are questions that I would appreciate some input from the readers of our newsletter. You know our company and hopefully appreciate what we have done for you either as a distributor, end-user, or supplier. What is your opinion? Your input will be shared in the future and we will respond to your suggestions for the Next trade show. I look forward to hearing from you, and we wish everyone a great and prosperous year.

Sincerely,

Robert Lawless
